This little “bugger” was imported to the USA between 1971-1973. It was called a “Captive import” from England by its maker. Although this Non-Dodge was based on a British auto it had an almost twin cousin built in Japan. The ads at the time touted its race car like handling. One ad bragged..”VW, Toyota, Datsun , BMW etc” all better start paying attention..Hmm wishful thinking. The only engine choice was a 1.5 ltr four cylinder putting out 70 horsepower.
On some later versions you could get a twin carb option boosting horspower to a blazing 75. Two transmission were available. A 4 speed manual and a 3 speed auto. You could chose from three body types. A 2 door hardtop,4 door sedan or a 5 door wagon(called Estate in England) Sales were slow.
Over its three year life span in the USA only 41,000 were sold. Compared to the Chevy Vega that sold over 200,000 units its first year. In 1974 it would be replaced by a re-badged cousin from Japan. Sadly for this car the OPEC fuel crisis would hit just as it was being ushered away from our shores..What Auto is This??
