The Chevrolet Chevette Diesel..King Of All Cars??

During the dark days of the OPEC gas crisis and still doing damage control from the debacle known as the Vega GM and Chevy needed an answer to the small car question. VW, Toyota and Datsun were increasing the small car market share and Chevy needed to act fast. The answer came from GM of  Brazil in the form of the Chevette. Launched in 1973 in Brazil the Chevette needed very little to be upgraded to USA emissions and safety standards. In need of energy absorbing steering column GM borrowed one from the Nova. A quick fix but till this day every Chevette has a cocked to the left steering column. Chevy had the Chevette ready for model year 1976. The base 1.4 liter engine could give you up to 40 MPG on the highway. You could opt of the 1.6 “Rallye” edition with cool stripes, wheels and a blazing 60 horsepower. Chevette’s sold well. In fact in 1978 over 300,000 Chevette’s were sold to economy minded owners. By 1981 GM and Chevy needed to increase economy and the “king of all cars” the Diesel Chevette was born.

Again borrowing from GM owned Isuzu Chevy shoehorned the 1.8 liter clacker under the hood of the Chevette. Rated at a Model T like 54 horsepower you could reach 0-60 MPH in a casual 19.2 seconds. The Diesel Chevette was not about performance but economy. Rated at a 55 MPG on the highway the Chevette Diesel out-econos cars of today like the Prius and Jetta TDI. Not meant for highway use because of its top speed of 81 MPH (going downhill) your

Diesel Chevette was the perfect commuter car. Hmmm much like the Nissan Leaf. Keeping in mind the 1.8 liter smoker would shake more than a vibro massage but it would last up to 200,000 miles with routine maintence. Try that with the battery pack in your Civic-Hybrid.  The “king of all cars” the Diesel Chevette was only produced from 1981-1986. Sad for perhaps the best car of all time. Why the best?  You could purchase a good condtion Chevette Diesel these days for less than $1000.00. With that you get cheap insurance, mind boggling economy, sporty 1970′s handling and more shaking than a bra-less Dolly Parton. In landscape full of Prius’s and other dull econo boxes you would be the only person on your block owning the “king of all cars” the Chevette Diesel.

1964 Chevy Impala..One Million Strong And Less Than A Dollar A Pound

In 1964 GM and Chevrolet had the world as its kingdom. Long before OPEC and the early 1970′s Gas Crisis caused people to stop buying full size cars Chevy sold “One Million” Impala’s in 1964. Nobody made a better fullsize car for the price than Chevy. The Impala came in five different body styles. A four door sedan and hardtop, station wagon, convertible and the top selling two door hardtop. You could opt for many options and upgrades. For those looking to add some spice to their Impala you could get the “SS”. Engines choices ranged from the 265 horrsepower 283 “Small Block” v8 all the way up to the road burning 425 horsepower twin carbureted 409 V8. Perhaps the most popular upgrade was the 300 horsepower 327 small block V8. Transmission choices were a 3 speed manual, 4 speed or the outdated two speed powerglide. Options were plenty. You could fill your Impala with nice touches like power steering and brakes for easy handling.  To make yourself more comfy A/C, power windows, seats and trunk were available. Starting at $2788.00 for a two door hardtop and weighing in at 3415 LBS your 1964 Impala was less than a dollar a pound. Chevy bragged that the Impala had “Jet Smooth” luxury. Riding on air was the Impala’s strong suit. maybe not the best thing for spirited handling but perfect for cruising while hold holding your  favorite girl on the cushy bench seat. The Impala was about more value for you buck. In a comparision test Motor Trend Magazine gave it top honors over offerings from AMC, Ford and Chrysler. “Alot of car for not alot of money” Motor Trend proclaimed in its 1963 road test. Chevy would do a total re-style in 1965 and Impala sales would remain strong for years. When OPEC shut the pipe line down in 1973 large cars like the Impala became dinosours. GM would never recover and would lose market share to Japan and Europe year after year. The Impala was put to rest and re-born in a number of remakes. Todays Impala while a decent car is not very “Impala-like”. Bland and front wheel drive it will never recapture the glory days of 1964 when a million people the Impala a car and a legend.  Chevy had some great TV commercials in 1964. Check out this vintage 1964 TV spot.

What Auto is This?? Quiz ..A 1970′s Econo Box Becomes A Rallye Winner

This little “cherry” of a car was the second generation of this model. Produced between 1974-1978 it was this companies first front wheel drive car imported to the USA. It would prove to be a good seller in the dark days of the early 1970s OPEC induced fuel crisis..Thankfully it had good MPG because it had a face(looks) only a mother could love..

Despite its Shrek looks it had solid mechanics and a fully independent suspension.  Its front wheel drive and modern suspension made it the choice of Rallye Drivers across Europe. It was this combo that made it Swedish Rallye champ in 1978.. An odd option was a the semi automatic trans..

The unusual transmission featured a two pedal system that used a torque converter in place of a conventional clutch. Sales on the semi-auto were slow. The engines were 1.0,1.2 and 1.4 liter. Only the 1.4 liter was avail in the USA. Body styles were two and four door sedans.

A  two door coupe and a three door wagon were also available. Only the two door coupe and wagon were available in the USA. This Whoopie Goldberg of cars would prove to be a reliable and economical for this high volume auto maker. It would pave the way for generations of front wheel drive cars. The model that followed would be a huge seller. What Auto is This??

What Auto Is This?? Chrysler Imports A Fuel Miser A Little Too Early

This little “bugger” was imported to the USA between 1971-1973. It was called a “Captive import” from England by its maker. Although this Non-Dodge was based on a British auto it had an almost twin cousin built in Japan. The ads at the time touted its race car like handling. One ad bragged..”VW, Toyota, Datsun , BMW etc” all better start paying attention..Hmm wishful thinking. The only engine choice was a 1.5 ltr four cylinder putting out 70 horsepower.

On some later versions you could get a twin carb option boosting horspower to a blazing 75. Two transmission were available. A 4 speed manual and a 3 speed auto. You could chose from three body types. A 2 door hardtop,4 door sedan or a 5 door wagon(called Estate in England) Sales were slow.

Over its three year life span in the USA only 41,000 were sold. Compared to the Chevy Vega that sold over 200,000 units its first year. In 1974 it would be replaced by a re-badged cousin from Japan. Sadly for this car the OPEC fuel crisis would hit just as it was being ushered away from our shores..What Auto is This??

What Auto is This?? An American Car Company Tries To Go European

CLICK Here To See What Auto Is This??

This Not-A-Ford first hit the streets in 1975. It was this car companies answer to the OPEC Gas Crisis of 1973. Meant to be a mid size car with full size luxury it was a sales hit. Over 560,000 were sold between 1975-1979. Trying to go European in theme and styling it had a very Mercedes Benz look. TV ads of the day joked how the parking attendant couldn’t tell this car from a Benz. Sounds like the parking dude was sipping some Boone’s Farm during his break.  You could order the very Euro sounding Ghia model. With the Ghia you got leather seats with very tacky fake wood dash, leather

wrapped steering wheel, vinyl roof and an LED clock. The Ghia also got rear disc brakes. This rear disc set up would become a favorite of street rodders for decades.  If you kept checking the option boxes you could get a fancy moonroof or 14 inch alloy wheels. Engines ranged from a 200 cubic inch six cylinder up to a smogafied 351 V8. According to Car and Driver magazine three of the five top execs of this company used the Ghia model as their personal transportation. What Auto is This??
