Slang Names For Cars..Part 5 “FORD”

Ford Motor Company has made some of the most amazing vehicles of all time. The Model T changed the way the world traveled.Classics like the Thunderbird and the Mustang are considered some of the most sought after collectible cars of all time.Like most car companies Ford can produce some real bombs. We could start with the Pinto but except for its flame thrower gas tank the Pinto was an almost good small car compared to the engine eating Vega. Not such a good idea was the nightmare known as the Ford Fairmont and its dumb cousin the Mercury Zephyr. So bad was quality control that 60 Minutes did a story on a Fairmont that rolled of the line with a Ford front and Mercury back. A staggering 90% went into the dealer for warranty work. With that in mind FORD slang is Fix Or Repair Daily  We guess at one time people wanted to buy a Ford Fairmont. A perfect example is this very 1970″s TV commercial..

What Auto is This?? Quiz

Lets start this quiz with What Its Not. This is not a Vega. This model was sold in Canada from 1973-1977 and in the USA from 1975-1977. Even though it had similar looks of its Chevy cousin it differed in many ways. Introduced to the USA in 1974 as a 1975 model it had 267 different parts from its “Rod Knocking Cousin”.

Trim levels were much more luxurious with upgraded door panels and carpet. A sporty model with Anti-Roll Bars and stiffer bushings would aid in spirited handling. With its anemic 80 horsepower engine you couldnt get in much trouble anyway.

Only two body types were available in the USA. A sporty two door hatchback and a wood sided two door wagon that would make Clark Griswold blush. The engine till 1977 was a 2.3 liter OHC that was known for blowing up before it left the showroom floor.Model year 1977 it got the much improved 2.5 liter “Iron Duke” pushrod engine. Still nothing could sway the public from the cars and engines terrible reputation.GM would not build a good small car till 2010. What Auto is This??

Did You Know??

Did you ever wonder why every steering column in the Chevy Chevette is installed slightly crooked? ..Chevy back in the early 1970s was in need of a fast replacement for the engine exploding Vega. The gas crisis was looming and GM did not have a small car ready for a economy hungry public. GM of Brazil had the answer.

Known as the T-Platform. Being built from 1973 with success GM decided to get the Chevette ready for USA standards. This would mean installing USA emissions standards and safety equipment. The 5 mph bumper proved to be no problem. Emisisons were installed choking the already anemic 1.6 liter down to tire burning 70 horsepower.

The last problem(Oh Im sure there was lots more) was the energy absorbing steering column. The GM “Bean Counters” decided no money or time was available to engineer a new column. So with the usual early 1970s GM quality control they “borrowed” one from the much larger Chevy Nova. Picture the look on the assembly worker at Chevy trying to install the too long column. “The dang things too long!!” Once again more Jose Feliciano from the boys at GM. Did You Know??
