Did You Know ?? The Rabbit Pickup Was Produced By Mistake??

Did you know??  The VW Rabbit Pickup was never meant to be produced. In 1979 when a car magazine spy photos spotted a one of kind pickup being used in the Westmoreland Pa.plant public pressure made VW produce the light hauler. The VW Rabbit Pickup was powered by either a 1.7 liter Bosch fuel injected gasoline engine or 1.6 liter dashboard shaking diesel. Over 80% of production would be the durable but agricultural sounding diesel engine. Rabbit Pickup’s have an almost cult like following and have worldwide clubs dedicated to them.

What Auto Is This? ..Turn Of The Century Hybrid

In 1900 long before Toyota crowded the globe with it’s Hybrid Prius this soon to be famous car maker produced this behemoth half electric half petrol monster. Its creator was only 18 years old when boarded a train to Vienna to start his first job. With no official engineering degree he created a non-friction drivetrain using four hub mounted electric motors.

Each motor was rated at 2.5 horsepower at cruising speed. At full throttle for short bursts they were capable of 7.5 horsepower to each wheel. The electro-car created a press whilrwind. An order was placed by a wealthy Englishman. The car ordered was to much different than the car shown at the 1900 Paris Auto Expo. The special car would have to be four wheel drive and capable of running on both gas and electric. The young skilled engineer melded the two drivetrains in short order.

The resulting large barge was a monster. The 44 batteries weighed in at close to two tons. The porty cruiser would tip the scales at close to 6000 LBS !!. The price was also massive for the time. A whopping 15,000 Austrian Crowns. The car was personaly delivered to the rich British gentleman in person by the young talented engineer. The Richie Rich customer was so happy with his Hybrid he ordered another. This time in 2 wheel drive. The owner of the this automaker would say of his gifted engineer “He is very young, but a man with a big career before him” Little did he know his employee would go on to design some of the most famous cars of all time. So ahead of its time that NASA studied and used the design principles for the Lunar Rover in use with the Apollo Program. What Auto Is This ??

Tis The Season To Drive Your Beetle In A Snow Storm

Every person who loves old cars has a great VW Beetle story. Despite the many shortcomings they have charm and toughness that no other car has. Carlisle Johnny has had many old Beetle’s. Some of my stories involved rust and assorted parts falling off or rotting into automotive heaven. Beetle’s also had the worst heat ever. Even when the heat kinda worked you got a cabin full of oil and fuel fumes that only a vintage Bug would give you. Even with it’s Ice Station Zebra heat Bugs could plow thru any snow storm. As you can see from this classic German TV commercial even the snow plow driver takes his Vee Dub to work…

What Auto is This?? This Grand Classic Would Not Survive The Great Depression

This car company was formed in 1913 when it was purchased from The Edwards Motor Car Company located in Long Island New York. It was swiftly moved to Elyna Ohio in 1914 and then to Toledo Ohio in 1915. it would remain in Toledo till its demise in 1933. It was known for its unusual Sleeve Valve type engines.Mostly in four and six cylinders they did produce a short lived V8 sleeve valve from 1917-1919. Slow sales and poor reliability killed the V8 with only a handfull being produced. In 1914 the price of a four cylinder model was a lofty $2500.00. That pricing would put them in the same league as Packard and Cadillac. With upgrades and improvements in production the prices would go an almost  Chevy like level. By 1922 they would produce and average of 55,000 vehicles per year. by 1929 the featured car would only be available with a six cylinder engine. Power ranged from 53-87 horsepower. By this time features and appointments would put them in the same league as Buick and Peerless. Thses upgrades would prove to be fatal when The Great Depression hit in late 1929. Despite that the larger models were considered the finest offerings from this soon to be orphaned make. What Auto is This??

On The Road With Johnny B ..Being Dumb And Single At The Dickens Festival

Being a downtown Port Jefferson Village resident you sometimes take things for granted. PJ Village has all kinds of amazing events throughout the year. So you tend to get spoiled since these events happen at your door step. For some odd reason when The Dickens Festival happens I become a tourist. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing. From Friday night till Sunday Eve I try to attend as many events as possible.

I really enjoy all the people dressed up in costumes and just the happy mood it put PJ VIllage in. I was approached by a man dressed as The Grim Reaper or some sort of angel of death. With his scary makeup he asked me if I was “afraid of death”? My answer was ” Hey pal I’ve been in auto parts 30 years I welcome death”  I think he was more scared of me than I was of him. Maybe that explains why he ran away mumblimg ” The horror oh the horror”

One of my favorite things to do is go for the horse and buggy ride. For some reason the clip clop makes me smile. While waiting on line I was standing next to a very attractive women and her pretty little daughter. I did scan the left hand noticing she had no ring on her finger. Yes ladies men look for that too. We started a casual chat about this and that. She then asked me if I was by “myself or was anybody else joining me?’ My answer was of course the usual DUH !!  or “nope I’m all by myself errr DUH !!”  After my Shakespeare like answer I just stopped talking. DUH again !!. After all this thrilling chat it was my turn to go for the buggy ride. There were only two seats left so I let my attractive flirting friend go ahead of me. I guess chivalry is not dead only stupid. As she got on the buggy with her daughter she glanced my way with a “can he really be that dumb” look. The horse and buggy went clip clopping away and her pretty face was gone forever. Behind me was a young man in his early 20′s. He looked at me and said “Dude whats wrong with you?” Hmmm whats wrong indeed..
