What Auto is This?? An Italian Family Car With Flair

First introduced at the 1956 Turin Italy Auto Show this sedan was part of a full line of cars that included this sedan, a two door coupe and a roadster.Meant as a replacement line for aging models this sedan was considered a large car for this maker of mini-cars. Powered by a 1200 cc engine it was more than twice the size of most of its other mini models.  This family sedan would remain almost unchanged from 1957-1963.  Unlike American cars this smallish(By USA standards) was built on a uni-body with independent suspension front and rear. Its bulldog like looks gained positive reviews with the automotive press of the day. Because of its large size compared to its sibling it gained the nickname in Italian of “  Granluce” or “Grand”.  The 1200 cc engine was strong and reliable but short on power. With just 55 horsepower 0-60 times were a very diesel like 16 seconds. Still it could deliver up 30mpg while seating five people in semi cramped comfort. It was a good seller for its maker but never achieved the sales numbers of its small stablemates due to its lack of economy in Europes high fuel prices.Rust was an issue and few survived making them collectible and prized for its good looks and spirited handling. What Auto is This Quiz 03/29/2011

“Ahoy Matey..Swab the decks”  This ampibious car was one of the most successful of all time. With almost 4000 produced between 1961-1968  it was neither a very good car or boat. Produced by German company Quandt Group and designed by Hanns Trippel its name in German is “Portmanteau” means “Water Car”  Powering this U-Boat for the street was a sturdy but lazy Triumph engine from the hoo-hum Herald. The 1147 cc lump produced a slug like 43  horsepower. Performance was Diesel Rabbit like. Top speed was a tepid 70mph.On the water you could count on 7  knots with no wind. Road and Track Magazine quipped in 1966 “We like to think of it as the fastest car on the water and fastest boat on the road.” Steering for both on road and water was done by the front wheels. This set up made for slow moves on the water. The on road transmission was the Hearld 4 speed manual. On the water you had a self designed outdrive that was engaged when you pushed a floor mounted lever. As with all “Water Cars” this car suffered from rust issues. Even when new it would only stay afloat as fast as the bilge pumps could keep it from becoming a submarine. Time Magazine joked  “Its flotation was entirely dependent on whether the bilge pump could keep up with the leakage.” Also  “a  vehicle that promised to revolutionize drowning”  Despite all of these flaws these floating cars have an almost cult like following. Of the 4000 made over 700 still survive. Pristine examples have been sold for close to six figure prices. What Auto is This??

What Auto is This?? A Car Maker Drinks Way To Much Cinzano

This late 1980s Slobmobile was a bad idea from the start. Based on a platform that was at best mundane. The idea for the “Grand Tourer” was the idea of this car makers CEO. Penned by famous Italian stylist Alejandro de Tomaso it was not one of his best efforts. More likley they came up with it after a long night of drinking Chiant and Cinzano.

Powered by a clickity clackity 2.2 liter turbo four cylinder for the first year (1989) Than a Mitsu based 3.0 liter V6 for model years 1990-91. Of the only 7300 built 500 of the 2.2 liter cars got an upgraded Cogsworth multi-valve head. The multi-valve head proved to be a nightmare blowing more steam(head gaskets) than Old Faithful

The only transmission was a slow shifting three speed auto. With its front wheel drive layout handling was not the best for a Grand Tourer. At least it could out handle a Chevy Citation. The soft Italian leather interior would crack and wrinkle more than Cloris Leachman’s face. This Guido-American Boombatz-wagon was just a bad idea. What Auto is This??
