What Auto is This? A Forward Look Finned Barge

This mid year introduction would be part of the cars styled by Virgil Exner known as the “Forward Look” .This cars name would be the first time used by this long running auto maker. The second time they used it in 1969 it would become a legend. Based on its low price two door sedan it was lavished with white wall tires, full wheel covers, electric windshiels wipers and upgraded deep pile carpet and interior with luxury fabrics. The only color available was “Silver”  Engnie choices were two. The “Getaway” Flathead six cylinder engine rated at 120 horsepower. In a 3800 lbs tug boat of a car that wasn’t much of a “getaway”. The other engine was a 325 cubic inch V8 rated at 195 horsepower. For some odd reason you could only get the less powerful version of this soon to be famous engine in this Silvery Winged Sled . This model would only be produced for one year till it was brought back in 1969 for a much different type of car. Oooooohhh very scary indeed !!! What Auto is This???

What Auto is This?? Sept 26th,2011

Long before this company was known for being a maker of now quality vehicles it had a few ahhh ummm “Charmers” This sporty coupe wanna be was sold in the USA between 1991-1995. Its roots was based on another “Charmer” a creaking rattling underpowered economy sedan. Its name was supposed to be a cross between a “Coupe” and “Sporty”..It was indeed a Coupe but due to its  whimpy 1.5 liter 81 horsepower engine it proved to be not to sporty. In the day of hot hatches and coupes from Toyota, Honda, Nissan and VW this little coupe was underbuilt and underpowered.  Much like bringing a pea shooter to a gun fight CRX’s and GTI’s simply kicked its butt. The only two transmissions available was a slow shifting 4 speed auto and rubbery 5 speed manual. By 1993 quality improved and a facelift with flush mounted headlamps and body cladding.  Backing up the upgrades was a much needed turbo model with a Lotus tuned suspension. Power was increased to 115 horsepower and handling was much improved. The only transmission available on the Turbo was the less rubbery 5 speed manual. The base model still plodded forward with the 81 horsepower lump. Despite some improvements it never sold well and suffered from less than “Asian” quality issues. Oddly this sporty-ish coupe would open the doors for future offerings form this soon to be high volume manufacturer. What Auto is This??

Cars Seen In Port Jefferson

1966 Ford Thunderbird. The term ‘Personal Luxury Car” was invented in 1954 when Ford introduced the 1955 Thunderbird. From the start the T-bird would out sell the Chevy Corvette by a 4 to 1 margin. Fords T-Bird would be on its 4th re-style when the new for 1964 model was introduced. That classic body stlye would last till 1966. For 1966 you could get your T-Bird in three body types. Two door hardtop or a landau. You could also go for the sexy convertible with the optional parade boot.

Even though it was the last year for this body style Ford added a new egg crate type grille up front and revised tailights that were housed in one unit. The stylish lights featured “sequential tailights” that would blink in three sections. Quite a show to look at but hard and costly to fix.In later years its cousin the Mercury Cougar would have the very groovy light show. Power would come from a wide selection on engines. The base 390-V8 with its clog-o-matic two barrel carb only put out 275 horsepower. You could opt for the 390-V8 with the four barrel rated at 315 horsepower. For those interested in burning gas and rubber they could order the 428-V8 rated at 345 horspower.

Interiors were filled with luxury touches. The rear seats featured a wrap around upper cushion that extended into the rear panels. Power windows, locks, seats, trunk were all available. The “Flight Deck” interior as Ford called it had a swing-away steering wheel for ease of entry and exit. Sales were good for T-Bird in 1966. 69,176 Birds found new homes. In later years a 1966 T-Bird would become a star in the movie “Thelma and Louise” as it was driven off a cliff into oblivion. The featured “Sunburst” bronze 1966 Thunderbird Landau Coupe was proud to be driven in 2010′s Port Jefferson Hill Climb..Its groovy sequential taillights blinking in the warm sun.

What Auto is This?? Quiz ..Billy Durant Creates A Legend

This make was founded in 1911. Its founder was a famous race car driver in his day. He gained fame driving Buicks for GM’s creator Billy Durant. This model was first introduced to the public in 1913. Its name came from its price at the time. $1000.00. But prices were soon lowered to compete with Ford’s Model T to $750.00

By 1916 This make made enough money for Durant to re-gain control of GM. This make would become part of GM in 1917. This model featured as standard equipment top and side curtains, electric horn, windshield, tools with jack and pump. Other nice touches were full electric lights and starter. Very “chic” for a low price car.

Power came from an valve in head 4 cylinder engine. The engine was fed with a Zenith double jet carb. The trans.was a three speed with a leather faced clutch. Much like its arch rival the Model T this model would survive till the 1920s with slight improvements. What Auto is This??
