All 280-560SL’s came with a heavy removable hardtop that needed two people to hoist. By model year 1981 the 450SL was gone repalced by the 380SL. Its all alloy 3.8 liter V8 was smaller but produced better performance and economy that the thirsty 450SL. Early 380SL’s were plauged with a single row timing chain. Not very Benz-like they were known to break and destroy engines. Benz dealers would do a “Kampagne”to update 380′s that didn’t already explode.
